KOENIG'S KUGEL

(Koenig's Sphere)

A film by Percy Adlon

Produced by Eleonore Adlon

2001, 53 minutes

Bavarian sculptor Fritz Koenig's monumental metal sculpture, Sphere, stood for decades in the plaza at the foot of the Twin Towers. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attack, as workers shifted layer upon layer of twisted rubble, they discovered that the muscular work of art had survived the ordeal – battered and dented, but largely intact. Percy Adlon, a longtime close friend of Koenig's, filmed the moving process of rescuing, restoring, and reinstalling what has become a symbol of endurance in the face of tragedy. Today, years after the brilliant artist's death, Sphere stands in a place of honor in the grounds of the 9/ll memorial that surrounds the new World Trade Center complex, proving that creation is a far more powerful force than destruction.

Percy Adlon made four other films documenting aspects of  the life and work of his friend Fritz Koenig:
